How ILSI works

ILSI provides you with the training you need to live more independently.

First, you will be helped to make a person centred plan. Person centred planning is about placing you at the centre of the action. About understanding what living arrangements you and your family want in the long term. ILSI isn't able to provide housing for you but the program will help you to think about what you would like for your accommodation options in the longer term.

For example, you may want to stay living in the family home, move into a granny flat or set up your own home. Wherever it is you decide ILSI can help you with the day to day living skills you will need to live more independently, For example, you may want to improve your cooking, shopping and money handling skills. Or learn how to catch buses and trains and enjoy a more active social life. Or undertake a course in first aid. The choice is yours. It is you who will drive the learning.

Second, ILSI will help you develop an effective support network. ILSI calls this a circle of support. Of course you may already have people supporting you. In this instance the role of ILSI is to strengthen and broaden this circle of support.

You will be able to use up to 35 hours per week of support from trained staff. How many hours you get will be worked out after your existing skills are reviewed. Naturally as your skills develop, support hours may reduce. You will however continue to receive support, there is no cut off date.

To begin the transition process you and your family will be matched with a suitable key worker. This matching process usually takes into account cultural and individual considerations. ILSI calls your key worker a facilitator. A facilitator is someone who works as a formal support person and is employed by a service provider. The role of your facilitator is to help you develop your person centred plan and make sure you receive the training and support you and your family need as you transition to more independent living.
